Caribbean Rugby Football Championships, Freeport, 12-17 October 1998

Date: 15 October 1998

BERMUDA vs JAMAICA: 39 – 12 Half Time score: 24-0

Jamaica rallied hard against a strong and skilful Bermuda side in the second round action at the Freeport Rugby Club, but Bermuda squad came out on top, 39-12.

At the opening kick off Bermuda won the ball from Jamaica and after a series of rucks, Jamaica gained possession and almost scored by passing the ball through the backs to the Bermuda try line. The play continued back and forth for a few minutes, then in a Jamaica line out, Bermuda took the ball, passed to fly half Alan Oliver, who quickly spinned to center Gavin Corcoran, who scored the first try of the game. Oliver converted (7-0). After about 8 minutes up and down the field, Bermuda gained possession and Gavin Corcoran scored again for an easy conversion by Oliver (14-0). In the 27th minute, the Bermuda scrum half came around the blind side of a scrum and went to score in the corner (19-0). Jamaica took the kick off and there was a change of possession from both sides, during which the Jamaica back dominated play, but did not manage to score. Just 4 minutes before half time the full back Jonathan Cassidy increased Bermudas lead to 24-0.

In the second half, play resumed up and down the field for three minutes after which Jamaica was awarded a penalty on the far side of the field. They passed the ball out quickly to the back and then on to the overlapping full back Christopher Gayle, who made a brilliant run to pout the first points on the board for Jamaica. (24-5). Bermuda took the kick off and within 4 minutes of play, Bermuda got a penalty outside the Jamaica 20 meter line, passed the ball into the middle of the storming pack. No Eight, Pat Cooper crashed into a barrage of Jamaican defenders and passed the ball onto his flanker, Rod Stewart who scored between the poles. The conversion failed (29-5). Bermuda dominated for the rest of the game but the tenaciously defending Jamaicans could not prevent two ore tries by Shane Gill and Josh McGavern. (39-5). In the closing minutes, Jamaica shjowed its fitness and kept running the ball. Their efforts were rewarded in the 76th minute when Andrew Fong outrun the Bermuda defense and scored under the post, offering an easy conversion for Christopher Gayle (39-12).

Bermuda vs Trinidad & Tobago 25-17 (Half Time 10-10)

This match was a worthy finale of the Caribbean Rugby Championship. A very exiting game with good opportunities and beautifull tries from both sides. Bermuda opend with a push over try in the 8th minute by lock Dennis Cherry near the posts, converted by Philip Heaney (7-0). This highly contested and hard game resulted in many penalties from the Bermuda side due to off side infringements. In the 21st minute Trinidad was awarded a penalty for off side in mid field and Michael Browner reduced Bermuda’s lead (7-3). Good running, passing and support opened up opportunities for TT resulting in a try in the 28th minute by center Brendon O’Farrel, near the post. Browner converted (7-10) Just before half time TT conceded a penalty and Bermuda evened the score (10-10). >

In the second half continued with attractive rugby and the tension rose as Bermuda kept playing close in the forwards. Bermuda’s No Eight, Shane Gill, scored in the 53rd minute from a well executed ruck ‘n roll (15-10). Possession of the ball was about equal and TT was at its strength when it could use its back. A beautiful play ensued in the 63rd minute from a scrum situation in Bermuda’s 22. TT’s scrum half Kevin O’Farrell got a good delivery, dive passed the ball to fly half Michael Browner who spinned a long ball missing inside center into a wide gap left for full back Sean O’Farrel, who came in from very deep at full speed, side stepped the completely surprised Bermuda defense and scored between the posts. An easy conversion for Browner (15-17). With TT leading, the tensions rose as Bermuda turned up the pressure in the forwards.

The fresh legs of David Bird and Sean Field-Lament were too much for the TT forwards.

David Bird scored in the 71st minute (20-17) and Shane Gill in the last minute of regular time, finalising the score at 25-17.

An Under 16, Tag Rugby match was played at Saturday, 17 October at 15.30 between Grand Bahama and New Providence. New Providence won with 8 tries to 1. New Providence Youth Rugby Team Wins from Grand Bahama

A friendly, but fiercely competetive, U16, 6-a-side, Tag Rugby Match between teams representing New Providence and Grand Bahama, was won by New Providence with 8 tries against 1. This match was held on Saturday 17 October 1998, before the final match between Bermuda and Trinidad during Caribbean Rugby Championship.

The players from the NP team were: Elliot Melis and Camio Forbes (from LW Young), Leonard Lafrance, Charles Johnson, Nathaniel McKinney and Calvin Cummings (from CR Walker), Gerard Harris-Smith and Dillano Bain (from CV Bethel), coached by Mr. Keith Saunders. The players from Freeport were: Brad Thompson, Brad Turnquest, Andrew Bell, Mike Limacher, Derek Hoover and Adric Ewing, coached by Nigel Kirkby. The game was refereed by Mr. Dennis Dwyer of Bermuda.

Tag Rugby is a non-contact game, played by boys and girls alike. There is no tackling or physical contact, but instead a player is stopped when the opponent pulls a tag or flag from a tag belt worn around the waist. The Bahamas Rugby Union assisted the Ministry of Education in the development of a PE curriculum to develop basic skills such as ball handling, hand-eye coordination, fitness and flexibility. These skills are not only beneficial to playing tag rugby but to any ball sport and the general physical development of the child as well.
