Alkins, Limada ,Quashie cop rugby awards

National players, Greame Alkins (men) and Jenilee Limada (women) walked away with the T&T Rugby Football Union’s 2009 “Player of the Year” awards at its annual prize giving function on Thursday evening at the Trotters Sports Lounge, Sweet Briar and Maraval roads, Port of Spain. Alkins, who plays for Carib, was also among the top five male outstanding players, while Limada, who plays for Royalians, was among the top two female players.
National Under-19 captain Joseph Quashie, who also plays for Harvard, was adjudged the youth Player of the Year. TTRFU president, Leslie Figaro said 2009 was a challenging year, nevertheless they were able to pull through, with the men and women winning the Caribbean 15’s title, while the men placed second to Guyana in the sevens event. The Under-19 team also placed third in its tournament.
Figaro said this year they are aiming to walk away with all the titles. Meanwhile he said all the national players will be undergoing beep tests this weekend. President of the T&T Olympic Committee, Larry Romany in his feature address, insisted it is vital that the stakeholders sit down and put together a strategic plan for the sport. Commenting of rugby being included in the Olympics from 2016, Romany said once you get into the Olympic family then accessing technology, coaching and funding comes easier.
He said T&T has the talent and he is confident that the team could qualify for the sevens tournament at the 2016 games. “We have the players with the talent, all we need is a structured plan to facilitate this. This plan must be well structured to suit the international standard,” said Romany. He assured the TTRFU that the TTOC will be willing to assist it at any time, especially in its development.
Former TTRFU secretary Brian Lewis was given an award for his contribution and service to Trinidad and Tobago Rugby .
